Description:
FACTORY LETTERED Antique WINCHESTER M1887 Lever Action Shotgun WELLS FARGO

“WF & CO. EX.” Marked on the Frame COACH GUN

Here we present an antique Factory Lettered Wells Fargo Marked Winchester Model 1887 Lever Action Shotgun, made in 1888 in New Haven, Connecticut. This model saw just under 65,000 made, and those under serial number 63953 are made prior to 1899, making those an antique and requiring no FFL. The Model 1887 is considered the first successful repeating shotgun. Its lever-action design was chosen at the behest of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, best known at the time as manufacturers of their lever-action rifles. Designer John Moses Browning suggested that a pump-action would be much more appropriate for a repeating shotgun, but Winchester management's position was that, at the time, the company was known as a "lever-action firearm company” and felt that their new shotgun must also be a lever-action for reasons of brand recognition. Browning responded by designing a breech-loading, rolling block lever-action.

Wells Fargo will forever be remembered as a stagecoach thundering across the American West, loaded with gold. The history of this company spans for over 160 years and is rich in events that have happened throughout the history of the United States. From the Gold Rush, through the Great Depression, and continuing today, Wells Fargo has travelled through the history of America as one of its greatest companies. Here in one of the shotguns it used to protect those interests it was guarding.

The included factory letter confirms the configuration, receipt at warehouse on July 30, 1890, and shipment was on August 5, 1890, seven days later. This example has "WF & CO. EX." marked on left of frame.

The overall condition is good. Original dark brown patina. Strong action. The bore is smooth with various spots of pitting and has darkened. Toe chip is missing. Solid wood on the buttstock and forend. Remaining visible markings are legible.
