Description:
James Woodward was one of the top five London gunmakers during the late Victorian and the Edwardian eras. To this day knowledgeable people in the trade attest to the quality of the workmanship as being of the highest caliber – in fact the best of them all! Woodward 12 bore sidelock no. 6048 was made 1910-15 and exhibits all the Woodward signature features including 29” Whitworth steel barrels, arcaded fences, sharp elegant engraving, 7-pin sidelocks, the T-shaped automatic safety, disc set strikers, highly figured French walnut, and gold-lined cocking indicators. Easy to carry for a day afield at 6lb 7oz.

The original 29” Whitworth Steel barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells and are nicely blued with shiny bores. London proofed for 1-1/8oz loads. Woodwards considered 29 inches to be the optimum length for barrels and called it “The Happy Length”. The barrels are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib which is inscribed “James Woodward & Sons  54 St. James’s Street London S W” and “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid Pressed Steel”. The right barrel is bored 0.735 with a constriction of 0.004 for Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.023. The left barrel is bored 0.733 and has a constriction of 0.006 for a slightly tighter Skeet choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.020. Great choking for the dedicated upland gunner for grouse, woodcock and quail.

The replacement stock is made of highly figured French walnut with crisp and fine checkering, a checkered butt, and a beautiful hand rubbed oil finish. The original splinter forearm is also made of French walnut with a handrubbed oil finish. While the checkering has been refreshed it is not as fine line as that on the stock. Stock dimensions are 15” to a checkered butt by 1-1/2” by 2-1/4. Cast off slightly for the righthanded shot.

A very handsome Woodward sidelock ejector game gun by a storied maker. Fully engraved in the grand Woodward style with highly figured wood. Check out the other listings to see how well this engraved Woodward is priced!
