Description:
c1780s OXFORD, ENGLAND CASED SET Antique JOHN COLLIS Flintlock Pistols .66

LARGE MATCHED PAIR MARTIAL SIDEARMS

Here we present an antique Cased Set of John Collis Pistols, made circa the 1780s in Oxford, England. John Collis was a gunmaker on his own between at least 1782-1798. Collis was apprenticed to William Emms and completed his apprenticeship with him the same year that Emms died, 1764. According to Evans & Godwin, when Collis passed away in 1801, he was the last in a long line of high-quality Oxford gunsmiths that were making their own guns, not simply doing repair work or selling guns others had made.

These large flintlock pistols are both signed “COLLIS” on the lock and “OXFORD” on the barrels with Birmingham proofs. These pistols have 9 ¾” barrels with large .66 caliber bores. One can imagine these being the sidearms of a ship’s captain, officer’s pistols, or even pistols used for dueling in an age of defending one’s honor in organized combat.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish. The actions are excellent and crisp. The bores are smooth and patinated. The left side of the stock on one pistol has a minor split at the front of the forestock and a split along the grain opposite the lock, both of which are stable; both stocks are solid otherwise. The case has some splits in the lid and other minor imperfections from age, use, and storage and remains in good overall shape. The case contains a .66 caliber bullet mold, a powder/ball/patch flask, and a cleaning rod.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrels are 9-3/4 inches.

Calibers: .66 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
