Research by Winchester Model 1886 expert John Madl found this to be the only one made with this combination of desirable special order features; 30 inch lightweight half octagon barrel chambered in 38-56 WCF, Double Set trigger, Checkered pistol grip deluxe walnut stocks and 1/2 magazine.  Looking at rarity by the numbers according to The Winchester Handbook by Madis, the Winchester Model 1886 serial numbers went up to 159994. Of the total 159994 production: Only 478 were made with longer than standard length barrels. Only 1,632 were made with part round barrels. (Madl found only 5 made with 30" part round/part octagon barrels in caliber 38-56, no mention of barrel weight.) Only 477 were made with shorter than standard length magazines. Only 5,163 were made with Set triggers (No mention of single or double set - Medl found only 1 double set trigger in 38-56) Only 280 were made with Checkered stocks. Only 501 were made with Special wood. Only 796 were made with Pistol grips. Condition - Shows plenty of use with a repair to the wrist of the stock and other wear and handling marks.  The barrel shows about 40% thinning finish with scattered freckles, wear and handling marks. Color case hardened receiver shows perhaps 20% finish with the balance having a mottled brown gray appearance with nickel-like undertones. The set triggers work but the hammer does not seem to have a safe position. While condition is always a factor, special order features are what makes them interesting. Comes with Factory Letter.
