Description:
This is a fantastic hand made Antique Temple Style Toggle Iron/Harpoon. This example is in very good+ used condition and is clearly marked D.W.S, struck while being forged. The total length is 33 1/8" from cone to tip, Head is 7 1/4" long, cone is 5 1/2" deep with a 1 3/4" opening and the shaft is almost 1/2" in diameter. This type of harpoon was designed and made famous by Lewis Temple, a New Bedford Massachusetts black smith in the 1840-50's. Although I could not find reference to the initials on the head, this example follows very closely to the size and form of the original LT made originals. The main blade edge is sharp and shows years of sharpening without abuse, there is light oxidation and a brown patina on the remaining surfaces and the shaft, ending is a slightly pitted cone also with a brown patina. This is a museum quality piece that will add to any collection.
