Description:
1832 Dated CIVIL WAR Antique WHITNEY ARMS Co. U.S. M1816 FLINTLOCK Musket

With 1832 Dated Lock & 1824 Dated Barrel Tang

Here we present an antique Whitney Arms Co. U.S. Model 1816 Flintlock Musket, manufactured circa 1832 in New Haven, Connecticut. Philos & Eli Whitney Blake were the nephews of Eli Whitney Sr. and were believed to be the trustees of the Whitney Armory from 1823 until Eli Whitney Jr. coming of age in 1842.

There were 24,000 muskets made under this contract in the 1830s through 1841. Many of these muskets were converted to percussion just prior to the Civil War, as was this example prior to being reconverted back to flintlock, though there were many that were used in the war that were still in their flintlock format. This process was done with many of these muskets in the years leading up to the American Civil War, but a great many were also done because of the war, when both belligerents were desperate for arms for their troops. Though this musket would have been over 20 years old at the time, it was still a great musket and much higher quality than many of the imports that would be purchased in Europe and issued stateside.

The overall condition is very good. Nicely reconverted. Smooth, even brown patina. Strong action. Good smooth bore for its age. This stock is solid with less than average handling wear. Markings are legible. “1832” dated lock. “1824” dated barrel.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 42 inches.

Caliber: .69 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
