Description:
Antique JOHN WURFFLEIN .415 Caliber Percussion TARGET Rifle Schuetzen Phila

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Precision Long Rifle

Here we present an antique Wurfflein Half Stock Percussion Target Rifle, made circa the 1850s. Wurfflein arrived in New York from Germany in 1832 and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By 1840, he was granted U.S. citizenship. In 1844, his brother John, also a gunsmith by trade, immigrated. They worked together for some time, and were two of the six that founded the Schuetzen Verein, a prominent German shooting club in Philadelphia. Their work included rifles and pistols, including close copies of their Philadelphia neighbor Henry Deringer’s hit pocket pistol.

This was a target rifle very possibly used at the club. The fully octagonal barrel features a sharply rifled .415 caliber bore with a turned-down round muzzle. Present sights are of the globe variety and very clean and clear. The action will work with or without first activating the set trigger. The wood grain is magnificent. It has the Schuetzen style brass butt plate that will hook beneath the arm. This is a rare and very clean precision rifle from the mid-1800s.

The overall condition is very fine. Original finish. Clear markings. Excellent, solid stock with fabulous grain structure. Crisp, excellent double set triggers and action. Bright, sharply rifled bore. Great sight picture. Excellent craftsmanship. I have no doubt this remains a very accurate and precise rifle.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 27-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .415 (land to land)

Overall condition as seen in photos.
