With Tang-Mounted Rear Peep Sight
Here we present an antique Model 1865 Breechloading Rifle in .40 Caliber, made by Massachusetts Arms Co. in Chicopee, Massachusetts, circa 1863-1865. These rifles were made contemporaneously to the prolific and better known cavalry carbines that were produced for the Union Army during the American Civil War. In Mass. Arms’ advertisements they were called the Model 1865, though they had been in production since 1863. Many of these were built from unused frames from these wartime contracts. These percussion “sporting” arms were made for the public who wanted one of the new breechloaders, but these were relatively quickly overshadowed by later models in centerfire.
This rifle features a 26” barrel in .40 caliber, while the cavalry carbine had a 20” barrel in .50. The sporting rifle had better sights with a bead front sight and a tang-mounted peep. There is also a simple V notch rear sight dovetailed into the barrel. The chamber length of this .40 caliber is .84 inches, which is the same as the .50 caliber version.
The overall condition is fine. Original blue and case color finish. The action is excellent. The bore is in fine condition: bright with sharp rifling. The stock is in fantastic condition with original varnish.
