Description:
Choice Early Ruger No. 1 .17BR Rifle 1st Full Year Production W/Scope
Offered here for sale out of a collection of many fine Ruger firearms is this “special” early serial numbered Ruger No. 1 single shot rifle with custom barrel. With our retail shop and gallery in Southport, CT and through are operation of the Ruger Collectors Assc. (RCA) we have acquired literally thousands of specimens from this company-Prototypes, low serial numbered specimens, factory take home custom models, factory samples, etc. we have had them all.
If you wish  something really special on your hands — this Ruger No. 1 is not just a rifle, it's a piece of firearms history with significant collector interest. Serial Number 8347 places it in 1969, the first full year of production for the No. 1. These early rifles are highly desirable among collectors for their craftsmanship and rarity.Ruger No. 1 rifles are falling-block, single-shot rifles — known for their strength, elegant lines, and exceptional accuracy. This specimen was outfitted through the factory to a custom Shilen barrel  in .17BR caliber. The .17BR (Benchrest) is a wildcat cartridge based on the .22 BR Remington, necked down to .17 caliber. It’s known for high velocity and flat trajectory, making it excellent for precision varmint shooting. Shilen barrels are among the most respected match-grade barrels available — well known in benchrest circles. A 26-inch barrel would provide excellent velocity and precision — perfect for wringing the most out of the .17BR.
This specimen was customized for an important Southport executive (Southport, CT is Ruger’s headquarters), and this rifle likely came out of Ruger’s custom shop or was factory-supported with strong internal connections. That immediately elevates the rifle’s rarity and provenance. The connection to a Sturm, Ruger executive means it may have been a one-off or very limited internal custom piece — likely never catalogued for public sale. Early Ruger No. 1 rifles had exceptionally fine walnut, often hand-selected with fancy figure and grain as is this one. A checkered pistol grip and forearm indicates a deluxe or custom treatment — early checkering patterns were also finely done compared to later models. Although certainly seeing a good deal of use for target shooting this early No. 1 has deep, rich bluing and cleaner finishing work, especially those made for insiders or executives. There are numerous use marks on metal and light on wood but overall we can say it is still in a 92-95% condition.
In addition, out of the collection we have found an unused BSA Sweet 17 hunting rifle scope (17-27x32AO) with 2-7 power that has never been used but can be custom fitted with rings on the existing mount by a gunsmith. We have shown the scope in box with images of mount. Certainly a special opportunity for the Ruger collector or shooter. L176
