Description:
Engraved ALLEN & THURBER BAR HAMMER Pocket Percussion Pistol Walnut Grips

Half-OCTAGON Barrel Civil War Era American DA

Here we present an antique Allen & Thurber Bar Hammer Double Action Single Shot pistol made circa 1845 and continued through the end of the Civil War Era. The bar hammer pistols operate in double-action. Designed for self-defense, they excel at close range and can be easily drawn from pockets or belts due to their flat hammer design. Allen's pistols were key to his business, with a long production history, various frame sizes, and calibers from .28 to .36. The barrel lengths ranged from 2 to 10 inches.

Produced in Worcester, Massachusetts between 1845 and the 1860s, Ethan Allen's .36 caliber percussion pocket pistol featured a revolving screw-off barrel and floral engravings. From 1830-1865, Allen & Thurber's pistols gained popularity, outshining even Sam Colt’s first model. These firearms played significant roles in American events like the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War, and Civil War, making them important historical relics.

The overall condition is good. Gray patina. The action is strong in both single and double. The bore is in good shape for its age and remains smooth. Lightly engraved frame. Solid grips with light handling wear. “591” numbered barrel. Legible markings.
