The Smith & Wesson Safety Hammerless models were created between 1887 (with the .32 variant launching in 1888) and just before World War II. These revolvers were chambered in either .32 S&W or .38 S&W and came with a five-shot cylinder. Most commonly, they featured barrel lengths of 2 inches, 3 inches, or 3.5 inches. Designed for practicality and ease of use, this revolver was perfect for those seeking a reliable firearm that could be easily carried in a pocket or holster at the turn of the 20th century. Its internal hammer design helped prevent snagging on clothing, ensuring that the gun would operate smoothly when needed. Additionally, it included a grip safety at the back of the grip frame, adding an extra layer of protection for the user. The top-break design allowed for quick and easy reloading with the automatic ejector. These thoughtful features were quite innovative for their time! The model was affectionately known as "The New Departure," reflecting the exciting new direction the company was taking in revolver design. The overall condition is fine. Original finish is preserved, although has matured to a plum patina. Excellent action. The bore is bright with strong rifling and a small bit of pitting at the breech end. Both grips are in very good shape with minimal handling wear. Markings are sharp. Numbers match. Own the original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 3 inches.
