Description:
RARE Civil War COLT 1855 Sidehammer .58 Perc. REVOLVING SADDLE RING CARBINE

w/ LONDON BRITISH PROOFS

Here we present a Rare London Proofed Antique Colt Model 1855 Revolving Sidehammer Saddle Ring Carbine, manufactured circa 1856 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt Model 1855 line of revolving rifles, carbines, and shotguns was an effort to provide the repeating action of a revolver in a long gun format with greater applications and longer range. Needless to say, military applications were at the forefront of the minds of Samuel Colt and the namesake of the design, Elijah K. Root, the company’s superintendent and, after the death of Samuel Colt in 1862, the company’s president. These were tried in relatively small numbers by the US Army.

This one went to England and was there proof marked in London according to their proof laws. One wonders whether this carbine was intended for use during the Crimean War and if it made it there, or whether it went to British India or was used on a trade ship. In any case, many of these guns that went to England during this time were brought back to the US during the American Civil War as both sides were short on modern weaponry in the early days of the war, and the Confederacy was hard up throughout the duration.

The overall condition is good+. The steel surfaces show that this piece was heavily weathered and rusted before it was found and cleaned up. The markings are still quite legible. The serial numbers match. The action is excellent, strong, crisp, with solid cylinder lockup. The bore is in good condition with nice rifling. The stock is smooth and solid. London proofs on the left side of the barrel and in the cylinder flutes. This is a fantastic example of a rare gun despite the weathered appearance!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
