Manufactured in 1868, this early production Winchester Model 1866 lever-action rifle (serial number 24655) features a 24-inch octagonal barrel chambered in .44 Rimfire. The rifle is outfitted with a full-length magazine tube, German silver Rocky Mountain front sight, and a Henry-style 900-yard ladder rear sight. The nicely figured American walnut stock and forend display attractive grain and retain most of an old restored finish. The straight slab-sawn stock is fitted with a matching engraved crescent buttplate with trap. Factory sling swivels are present on both the forend cap and buttstock. The top tang channel of the buttstock bears a partially visible serial number ending in “5,” matching the final digit of the receiver’s serial number. The inside toe of the buttplate is properly stamped with the last four digits of the serial number. The lever lock appears to be a replacement, likely from a Model 1873, and some tang screws are also replacements.
The rifle is richly decorated with masterfully executed deep relief engraving in the style of Conrad Ulrich. While unsigned, the work closely resembles known House of Ulrich pieces such as the one pictured on page 154 of Winchester Engraving by R.L. Wilson. The engraving consists of nine deep relief vignettes. The left side of the receiver shows a standing bull elk with a reclining cow and calf, a hunter with rifle, and a walking bull elk in a wooded scene. The right side displays a bull and cow elk in the forest, a bird dog, and the goddess Diana with a hunting dog. Additional vignettes include a squirrel and a hawk engraved at the top rear edge of the receiver, and a snarling dog over the top front. Both side panels of the rear receiver are engraved with a hunting dog and hare. The balance of the receiver is covered in fine foliate scrollwork with punch-dot background, as well as diamond-and-dot border motifs. The bottom of the carrier bears a large flower blossom engraving, and both tangs, the forend cap, and buttplate tang are engraved to match.
The barrel and magazine tube show a pleasing aged blue/brown patina with minor handling marks and a re-rolled top flat address. The receiver has developed a soft mustard-colored patina with traces of silver plating on the interior. The hammer and lever have aged to a dark brown finish with light pitting. The wood is sound overall with minor shrinkage in the forend and a touch-up finish on the wrist. The bore is worn bright and retains decent rifling. The mechanics are crisp and functional. This rifle is an extraordinary example of fine 19th-century craftsmanship, combining historical significance with exceptional artistry.
