Description:
Inscribed “D.F. Mitchell” Antique SMITH & WESSON No. 1 ½ .32 RF Revolver

One of only 26,300 1st Issue “OLD MODEL” Revolvers

Here we present an antique Smith & Wesson Model Number 1-1/2 First Issue “Old Model” .32 Caliber Rimfire Revolver, made circa 1865-68 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The No. 1 was Smith & Wesson's first metallic cartridge firearm, using the innovative “bored through cylinder” patented by Rollin White, which revolutionized revolver design. From 1857 to 1870, Smith & Wesson fiercely defended this patent, maintaining a monopoly on American cartridge revolvers until it expired. This period resulted in substantial profits for the company, but left White financially strained and U.S. Chief of Ordnance Alexander Dyer frustrated for missing out on the technology during the Civil War, leading the government to favor Colt for contracts due to their .44 caliber revolvers over S&W's .32 caliber models.

The S&W Model No. 1-1/2 Revolver was a larger version of the No. 1, maintaining the same aesthetic. As both .32 caliber and .22 caliber models evolved in features and design, the No. 1-1/2 achieved commercial success.

The overall condition is good. The action functions, but the cylinder does not lock-up or index properly. Good bore for its age, has dimmed and maintains serviceable rifling. Both grips are in good shape with average wear from handling. Markings are legible. The finish on this example consists of mixed brown and gray patinas. This example has "D. F. Mitchell" inscribed on the backstrap.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .32 Rimfire

Overall condition as seen in photos.
