The Savage Model 99‚‚s story begins with Arthur William Savage, a fascinating and inventive individual. Born in Jamaica, he was an inventor, railway engineer, and even founded the Savage Arms Company.
Savage recognized the limitations of existing lever-action designs of the late 19th century, particularly their reliance on tubular magazines that were less than ideal for pointed, high-velocity cartridges.
His key innovation was the development of a rotary spool magazine. This unique magazine design stored cartridges in a rotating drum, allowing the use of pointed \"spitzer\" bullets, which offered better ballistics and were becoming increasingly popular with the advent of smokeless powder.
