The Savage Model 110 was designed in 1958 with the goal of creating an affordable, reliable, and accurate bolt-action rifle.
Early innovations included a left-handed version (1959) and a short-action version (also 1959).
In 1998, Savage re-engineered the short-action Model 110, leading to a new model numbering scheme where short-action models became the Model 10 and long-action models retained the Model 110 designation.
The Savage Model 111 emerged as one of the long-action variants within this reorganized Model 110 family.
