Description:
WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 45-70 LEVER ACTION RIFLE.

This rifle was manufactured in 1895.and is considered an Antique. This rifle has a 22" round barrel that has been cut back from the original length of 26" Is equipped with a Williams Rear Peep Sight, rear sight is missing and the dovetail has been filled with a Williams Filler block, and has a blade front sight.

CONDITION:
The overall condition of this rifle is good. . All the metal has a homogenous somewhat brown coating that appears to be a weather coating of some sort. . The screw heads on this rifle are in very good shape with little or no abuse. The butt stock has been cut (12 1/2" pull) back and a home made brass butt plate has been installed. The metal and has been refinished or coated at some point in its history with a brownish coating there is no original finish on the rifle..The stocks exhibit the  scattered light dings & dents from use. The bore is very good with well defined and some light abrasion. Action is crisp and cycles well.

This rifle came into the shop as a consignment from right here in NH. It also came with an interesting history. It turns out that this rifle was owned by two women named Donna Niles and Kay White who were veterians of the Woman's Amry Corp (WAC). They lived in Wilmot, NH and in the fall of 1946 moved to Freedom Acres and made jellies. The story is that this rifle was customized by them to fit them and was used to shoot deer from their porch, I can't put a link on this site but you can see ttheir story on You Tube:

The Birth of Freedom Acres and the taste of the Wild

The rifle actually fits pretty well even with the shortened butt stock and cycles from the shoulder easily. The sight picture is very good with the Williams Peep and blade front sight. With the shortened barrel the rifle is considerably lighter than a standard Winchester 1886. Living in NH for many years now I have met many characters and the story of Donna Niles and Kay Whitle fit right in with some of the unique people this region of the country produces. Even though they were originally city girls they made their own way here in NH, I can see those ladies using this rifle to harvest fall deer at Freedom Acres.

When I first looked this rifle over I thought that it could be Cody lettered to see what the original configuration was then basically bring it back to what it was originally. Winchester 1886 rifles in 45-70 are in demand especially ones that are antique. I cycled dummy 45-70 rounds through the rifle but have not shot it. It cycles crisply and the bore is surpisingly in good shape. It certanily could be use as is. The more I thought about it I thought it should be presented as it is right now just how those ladies set it up back on Freedom Acres to use on their farm. An interesting rifle with a surpising history. This is an antique and can ship directly to the buyer.
