Description:
ENGRAVED 19th Century Crank Handle DAVID LURCH SHOOTING GALLERY Air Gun

Primarily Used for INDOOR TARGET SHOOTING/HUNTING

Here we present an antique Engraved David Lurch Crank Handle Air Gun, made circa 1863 to the 1870s in New York, New York. Brothers David and Joseph Lurch were listed as gallery gun makers in New York as early as 1863. Air guns represent the oldest pneumatic technology. The oldest existing mechanical air gun dates back to about 1580 and is in the Livrustkammaren Museum in Stockholm. This is approximately what most historians recognize as the beginning of the modern air gun. Throughout 17th to 19th century, air guns in .30 to .51 calibers were used to hunt big game, deer, and wild boar. These air rifles were charged using a pump to fill an air reservoir and gave velocities from 650 to 1,000 ft/s. They were also used in warfare, the most recognized example being the Girandoni air rifle.

Air guns of this style were used primarily for indoor target shooting as produced during the Civil War era. "Wind guns" had several advantages over conventional firearms including that they were quieter, smokeless, quicker to reload, and they also required less cleaning since they did not require corrosive black powder. This gallery air gun has a swivel breech, octagon barrel chambered in approximately .26 caliber/6.5 mm with a smooth bore, a dovetail mounted blade front sight and notch rear sight, and is mounted with a walnut forend and buttstock with a checkered wrist. It functions through the use of hand crank (not included) that is attached the right side for cocking in order to fill the cylinder reservoir, and upon pulling the trigger the spring loaded piston releases. "DAVID LURCH, N.Y." is marked on the top flat at the breech.

The overall condition is good. Original patina. The action has not been fully tested. The bore is bright and smooth. There is a repair to the underside of the fore stock. Otherwise, solid throughout. No spanner included.
