We are located in Antrim, New Hampshire Description: This rifle was manufactured in 1907 and is considered a late Model 1886 in 45-70, with a 22” round tapered barrel and full magazine Condition This is a fine example of a late model 1886 rifle featuring a rapid tapered round barrel in the powerful 45-70 caliber. The take down is tight and in excellent shape. The bore is bright in very good condition showing light pitting throughout and very strong rifling. The rifle shows signs of cleaning and reapplication of finish on the metal surfaces as well as the stocks from long ago. The barrel and magazine tube have a mottled gray-brown patina showing scattered light oxidation throughout with generous reapplied blue in the protected areas and modest wear about 1” long behind the front barrel band from using the takedown feature. The barrel shows finish wear along the forend junction. The action retains perhaps 80% reapplied blue thinning to gunmetal gray along high edges and the belly of the action with mild slot wear on the action screws. The bolt and hammer retain about 80% reapplied blue with some light pitting present on the bolt behind the extractor while the lever, loading gate, and crescent buttplate have muted to a pleasant gunmetal gray patina showing character. The straight grip walnut stock and forend show signs of finish applied long ago with honest wear on contact points, light chipping along the upper wrist, and fine raised grain. The rifle is sighted with a “Climbing Lyman” #21 rear sight, a neatly blanked rear dovetail, and a Marbles Duplex #5 front sight with a fine brass bead on the blade and a coarse hinged bead. An honest rifle with lots of character and in a desirable chambering. These rifles are handy and easy to carry the sights on this rifle are matched perfectly for an easy sight picture. The size of this rifle is similar to the Winchester 1886 carbines which are also very handy. In the last picture this rifle is set next to a Browning 1886 carbine to compare sizes.
