Description:
Completely original Colt Pre-War National Match .45 automatic.  Introduced during the Great Depression, this was Colt's finely tuned target version of their Government Model (commercial 1911A1).  However with a sticker price of close to double that of the Government Model, it was a slow seller during those lean times and while in production for nine years, only 4813 were made. Features included a hand honed action and a special match grade barrel with fitted bushing.  This particular pistol is also fitted with the Swartz Safety device which was only in use for a couple of years (Clawson estimates that likely fewer than 1200 Gov't Model & National Match pistols were sold in the U.S.A. with this feature).  The Swartz Safety blocks the firing pin unless the grip safety is depressed and acts to prevent an accidental discharge should the loaded pistol be dropped on the hammer.  It has no effect on the trigger pull.  The pistol is fitted with fixed sights, the front being the special 0.10" wide, round pattern sight (the standard front sight on the standard Government Model measures 0.058" in width).
This National Match pistol has seen only moderate use and remains in excellent overall condition.  There is a hint of sharp edge wear, a rub to the underside of the trigger guard, and a few scattered handling marks including some surface scratches to the underside of the frame's dust cover.  Almost all of the finish remains on the grip straps.  The completely original finish is about 96-97%. The Colt "VP" verified proof and assembler's mark are stamped through the finish; the bullet feed ramp is milled in the white; the grip screw bushing stake marks show burnishing...all good indicators of original finish....no refinishing, no touch-up.  The correct/original full checkered walnut stocks are in very good condition showing light wear and one ding to the right panel, but free of any cracks or chips. The slide is properly serial numbered beneath the firing pin retainer and properly matches the frame.  The original National Match barrel is properly marked "COLT 45 AUTO MATCH" below the chamber and has the "circled MB" match barrel proof on the left lug.  The internal wear patterns between the frame/barrel/slide mirror each other perfectly and indicate that these parts are all original to one another.  This pistol is in excellent mechanical condition and has an excellent bore that exhibits bright, sharp rifling.  One excellent condition correct full blue/pinned base magazine is included.  It comes with a Colt factory letter which verifies this pistol was made as a National Match and was shipped to one Lieutenant Harrison G. White in Springfield, Massachusetts on September 13, 1939.  Many National Match pistols were used in the 1930's at the Camp Perry competitions and it would be interesting to research the original purchaser of this pistol.  This is a very nice, all original example of Colt's flagship pre-war automatic...a significant addition to any Colt collection.
Ships in a new reproduction Colt box.  Looks better live -- more pictures on request.  Thank you.
