Description:
Highly desirable Factory Engraved Browning A5 ~ English Grip. Serial number is 5139. This is considered a second year production gun. Barrel & receiver are matching. Bore is excellent. The blueing is original and shows 121 years of honest use & wear. The factory special order engraving is custom Type IV, with coverage over entire reciever, upper & lower tang, trigger guard as well as out onto the barrel. It has the famous "smiling" dog on the back of the receiver! Known history: when I first obtained this A5, it had an early Remington 11 "pistol grip" stock. The trigger guard was crushed, the lower tang bent down for the pistol grip. The most agreegis damage was to the bottom of the tang, a large hole was drilled thru the engraved dog for a wood screw to keep the stock on. After contacting my friend, gunsmith Monte Manderino, he agreed to undertake the project. I located an early, straight gripped A5 (with a hardened rubber pad) that provided the proper English grip buttstock. I bought a new A5 "tribute" forearm. Monte refinished the wood set, replaced the hard pad with a period Silvers pad, he fixed the bent trigger guard & tang... and most important, restored the engraved dog on the lower tang. We did discuss re-finishing the metal, but decided losing the fine elements of the engraving would have been criminal. All the restoration work was done to match the metal condition. Monty is shown in the last pic. I will include a copy of the new 3rd edition of the Browning A5 book and the vintage shotgun case with the purchase. Shipped via UPS for $55. with insurance at buyers expense.
