Baker Transitional Percussion Revolver made circa 1852 in London, England. This revolver was patented by Thomas Kerslake Baker of London. He was awarded British Registered Design No. 3230 on April 24, 1852, for his long spur hammer. Fundamentally, historians agree many of these went to the Confederate forces simply because Southern businessmen delt with English speaking suppliers from Europe. French, German, Spanish, etc languages were not understood in the South in contrast to the North. This Baker revolver is a double action “transitional” type revolver, transitioning from a Pepperbox to a Revolver, with a six-shot cylinder. These are truly the “link” between Samual Colt and the old pepperbox revolving pistols. The hammer has a long cocking lever which is notched to facilitate use of the sights and a loading lever—something that was fast becoming a staple in American revolvers like Samuel Colt’s. It has a sliding safety located on the left side of the revolver frame. The nipple shield has a fine knurled forward edge. It is fitted with two-piece fine rosewood grips. Baker revolvers can be identified by markings on the body and the barrel, as well as the hammer. Typically, percussion revolvers of this type that utilize a cocking lever on the hammer will have markings reading “BAKER’S PATENT, REGISTERED APRIL 24 1852” under the hammer. The serial number is located on the back of the frame. Proof marks abound on every chamber of the cylinder and the barrel has the assembly number for the barrel and cylinder sub-system. The overall condition is outstanding. The action is absolutely perfect with precision timing. The safety works perfectly. The bore is in good condition with strong deep rifling. Grips within themselves are fine pieces of pistol furniture. This piece is adorned with beautiful factory engraving. Barrel is 5-1/4 inches. Caliber: .44 Percussion. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Make no mistake this is a high condition investment piece of distinction. You will have major bragging rights owning this piece of England gun making history! Being an antique this will require no ATF paperwork for the transaction.
