Description:
Antique  Rare Cowles & Son  Single Shot .22 Deringer
Cowles & Son Co. was a firearms manufacturer based in Chicopee, Massachusetts, active from approximately 1865 to 1876. The company is best known for producing small, single-shot derringers during this period.
Company Evolution
Cowles & Son Co. evolved from earlier entities:
  • Cowles & Smith (circa 1863–1868)
  • W.W. Cowles, Deane & Co. (circa 1869)
By 1871, the company was operating under the name Cowles & Son in Chicopee, Massachusetts, where it remained until around 1876 .

Product Line: Single-Shot Derringers
Cowles & Son Co. produced single-shot derringers chambered in .22 rimfire. These pistols featured a brass frame, a 3.25-inch round side-pivoting barrel, spur trigger, and walnut bird's head grips. They were manufactured primarily in the mid-1860s through the late 1870s .
Approximately 200 of these pistols were produced in 1865 . The pistols were marked "Cowles & Son, Chicopee Mass" on the barrel, and some examples have been found with just serial numbers, indicating a limited production run.

Historical Context
The derringer, a compact and easily concealable firearm, gained popularity in the mid-19th century. Following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth using a Philadelphia Deringer in 1865, the term "derringer" became synonymous with small, easily concealed pistols. This event likely contributed to the proliferation of similar designs by various manufacturers, including Cowles & Son Co.

Legacy
Today, Cowles & Son Co. derringers are considered collectible antiques. Their historical significance, craftsmanship, and the company's role in the broader context of American firearm manufacturing during the 19th century make them

Condition:  SN1583  4” barrel, part round part octagon. Barrel lengths varied from 2-4” in length.  A nice smooth bore with some minor spot pitting from black powder use.
Metal surface was a brass frame with silver plated finish. About 30% of the silver finish remain with the remainder turning to an antique ocher finish.
The barrel has traces of the original bluing as well with some scattered light oxidation blemishes and light handling marks.
The rosewood grips are original , in very nice shape and numbered to the gun. Action works excellent with a strong hammer spring. Tiny bit of side to side play at lock-up when closed.
The trigger return spring was replaced at some point with a folded piece of leather which seems to work quite well. Back in the day replacement metal springs were probably not that readily available so people used what was on hand. I have test fired some .22 shorts and worked very well. This gun has an unusual crowned muzzle and larger front target sight . There are no barrel  markings only serial numbers which was frequently found with some manufacturers. Ethan Allen was an example of sometimes omitting barrel markings.
