Description:
28 inch octagon barrel chambered in 44 WCF. The bore is near bright rating good to very good showing very fine pitting in the grooves with strong rifling throughout. Equipped with a brass knife blade style front sight and an early style short base sporting rear. Overall metal surfaces appear a mottled gray brown showing thinning traces of original finish in protected areas. Formerly in the collection of author James D. Gordon. He referenced this gun several times in his book, Winchester’s New Model of 1873 - A Tribute - two volume set. On page 134 it is shown with other “Extra Long Rifle Buttstocks”. On page 216 it is shown with several others having “Thumbprint Dust Covers”. On page 337 it is included in a list of “Assembly numbers of Model 1873s Examined”. On page 361 it is shown with other “Standard First Model Rifles”. Comes with a Factory Letter addressed to James D. Gordon. The letter mentions the 28 inch octagon barrel and a set trigger. The trigger functions but does not act as a set trigger having a broken/damaged adjustment screw. The 14 inch LOP extra length buttstock is likely not original as it is not mentioned in the letter and appears to be made of gumwood rather than walnut as the forearm is. It has a name carved into the right side and there is a crack in line with the lower screw for the crescent rifle buttplate.
