Unfired Documented Colt Commando .38 Revolver with Police Ownership
Offered here for sale and acquired from a collection which we have the opportunity to sell for the second time is this SUPERB WWII period first issued Colt Commando .38 revolver.  A fascinating and highly collectible piece the  Colt Commando was introduced in 1942 during World War II as a cost-effective version of the Colt Official Police revolver. Due to wartime material and labor shortages, Colt streamlined production, resulting in a Parkerized (phosphate) finish which was more durable and utilitarian, ideal for military and police use.
It has an unpolished, smooth frame as opposed to the high-polish bluing and checkered wood grips seen on pre-war Colts. Chambered in .38 Special, with 4" barrel. Between 1942 and 1945, Colt produced approximately 50,617 Commando revolvers. They were issued to:
  • U.S. military police units
  • Defense plant guards
  • Local and state police departments
  • Civilian police forces under wartime contracts
This specific revolver, serial number 23717FL places its manufacture in the mid-to-late period of Commando production—likely around 1943–1944. The "FL" suffix suggests it may be part of a special contract batch, possibly denoting “Federal Loan” or a state-specific allotment, as was done for some wartime state police arms. The 4" barrel, parkerized finish, smooth frame, Colt wood grips is a classic configuration. The revolver appears unfired, with a couple of only minor storage marks and images show "peach fuzz" from light cloth wiping which we will blow off before shipping. Overall this is a  museum-quality condition for a WWII-era sidearm.
 In addition the specimen has provenance: as it was issued to a captain, of the Connecticut State Police originally. We acquired it in 1990, resold and re-acquired it in a collection recently. We are pleased to offer it once more. We will also offer a documentation letter attesting to that fact.
