1850s 6-Shot UNDERHAMMER with ACCESSORIES
Here we present an antique Cased and Engraved J.R. Cooper’s Patent British Underhammer Percussion Pepperbox Revolver, made circa the 1850s in Great Britain. Joseph Rock Cooper worked as a gunmaker between 1836 to 1863 in Birmingham, England. He is known for his many design improvements of rifle and pistols, but best know for his pepperbox pistol.
This pepperbox is one of the smaller models out there, featuring 6 shots of .38 caliber ball. It was meant to be carried in the pocket of a stately gentleman or possibly in the purse or muff of a dignified lady for self-defense. This example is a double-action only pistol and must have been quite a selling point. As these were considered “point and shoot” short range defensive weapons or “belly guns”, the market did not seem to object to the limitation of not having sights. The frame is nicely engraved and it sports a scarcer underhammer action.
The overall condition is near fine. Original finish and patina. The action is excellent. The bores are smooth and dim. Grips show use and remain solid. The case is in very nice condition and includes tools, cap tin, powder flask and a key. The frame is engraved with floral designs and the left side reads “J.R. COOPER/PATENTEE”. This is definitely one of the fancier pepperboxes of its day!
