Description:
Antique Allen & Wheelock .36 cal Bar Hammer No 9 pistol

Description:
Allen & Wheelock .36 cal Bar Hammer  No 9 percussion pistol
One of Allen & Wheelock’s notable inventions was the Bar Hammer Muff pistol, which gained popularity during the mid-1800s. The Bar Hammer Muff pistol was a compact, concealable firearm primarily intended for personal defense. These pistols were often chambered in .36 caliber and featured a distinctive half-round, half-octagon barrel design. The pistol could be loaded from the muzzle end  or from unscrewing the barrel. Back in 1840’s these pistols sold for $6.25 a pair. This model has engraving which Allen & Wheelock at some point discontinued. At 8 cents each, additional cost for engraving was considered too much of an added manufacturing expense.

This specific Allen Wheelock .36 caliber Bar Hammer Muff pistol bears markings that provide insight into its origin and design:

Side of hammer marked:
"ALLENS PATENT APRIL.18.1845”

Top of barrel marked:
"ALLEN WHEELOCK”
Serial number (SN) 421

Allen & Wheelock’s contributions to firearms design and manufacturing played a significant role in shaping the industry during the mid-19th century. His innovative designs, such as the Bar Hammer Muff pistol, were emblematic of the era's advancements in firearm technology and served as precursors to future developments in small arms design.

Condition:
3’ half round half octagon barrel with a nice bore , minor pitting and still showing nice rifling. The metal surface has been cleaned to pewter with stains from oxidation and a few handling marks. The frame is a mix of pewter and gray showing spots of moderate oxidation.  Barrel and hammer markings are still somewhat clear and legible.  The smooth walnut factory grips are in excellent condition and fit the frame well with minor handling marks ,  areas of worn finish,  The grips are also stamp numbered to the gun. The pistol appears to function very well mechanically with a strong hammer spring. Trigger guard is missing from this model.   A display case in very good condition is included.

As a collector's piece,  this Allen Wheelock .36 caliber Bar Hammer Muff pistol holds historical significance due to its association with an influential figure in American firearms history and its representation of mid-19th-century firearm design and innovation. Its unique markings and features make it a desirable item for enthusiasts of antique firearms and collectors of historical artifacts.
