However, the barrel marking, “SA” inside of a rectangle, indicates, according to my reading, that the rifle was Finnish army property. Its overall length is 51 inches and weighs in at 9 pounds, 8 ounces (including sling). It appears to have most, if not all, of the upgrades through 1910, such as the curved Russian Arshin rear sight and the fourth barrel band type. The sling, if not original to the rifle, is certainly period correct. The markings on the barrel and receiver include the Tzarist eagle, several acceptance proof marks (?K and ?), and the “SA” inside a rectangle indicating Finland army property. See high-resolution markings photo. All markings include: - ?K Russian proof commission acceptance mark stamped chamber - ? in circle Russian proof commission acceptance mark stamped on chamber - T-shaped Tula hammer on the top of the butt plate, just below the screw. - Tula hammer on forward part of magazine tang, about ½ inch forward of the tang screw - Tula hammer in circle on top of the cocking piece (poorly stamped, obscure) - Tula hammer in circle on the bottom of the bolt, just before the bolt handle - Tula hammer (no circle) on the top front of the rear sight - Tula hammer on the stock nose cap - Acceptance mark on top of the bolt, just before the bolt handle - Serial number N8347 stamped on the top of the receiver - Serial number 8347 on the exposed portion of the bolt. - “M917.62R RUSSIA” on the right side of the barrel, 2¼ inches behind the muzzle - What looks like a 7 on the bottom of the stock, just behind the rear barrel band. - What looks like a 7 on the right side and just at the end of the hex receiver. - What looks like a backward 3 on the top of the stock, about a ½ inch forward of the butt plate - Tsarist eagle over ?K Russian proof acceptance mark on top of hex receiver (very light) - Acceptance marks on the receiver - Importer stamp on the bottom of barrel, about 2½ inched from the muzzle – “CAI STAIR VT” There are a few other marks, like the M on the top of the barrel, just forward of the rear sight that I cannot find references for and seem to lack any real significance, like maybe inspector marks. The overall condition of the gun is about 75-80 percent. It is fully operational. It does bear the marks of 116 years of age and use, particularly the stock which has numerous scrapes and dents, though none are large and/or deep. The metal components are all in good shape and working order. The barrel is clean and shiny, and the rifling is strong. There is some OLD rust on some of the external components, like the stock cross bolt head and nut, the nose cap at the front end of the stock, the escutcheons around the front sling swivel, and the screws of the front barrel band. There is also about an inch of heavy rust on the cleaning rod, about four inches from the tip. It does not affect the screw threads at the end of the cleaning rod, and the rod is strong.
