Description:
Antique “POOR BOY” Full-Stock .58 FLINTLOCK American FRONTIER Long Rifle

Kentucky Style Smooth Rifle “LONDON/WARRANTED” Lock

Here we present an antique “Poor Boy” Full Stock Flintlock Smoothbore Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century. For generations, terms like “Squirrel Rifle”, “Barn Gun”, or “Poor Boy” were used when referring to a plain, inexpensive, home grown working tool. This style of rifle could have possibly been made entirely by hand, using hand-operated tooling done in a frontier setting. There were strong pockets of recorded long rifle manufacture and use throughout the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and the Carolinas.

Its stout octagonal barrel is in .58 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game, including high flying waterfowl, or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of the so-called Kentucky long rifles have been lost over time. This rifle is one such example.

The overall condition is good. Original, smooth and even brown patina. The hammer will not hold in the cock position. This example has been reconverted. Good bore for its age. The stock is solid with an average amount of dents, dings, and wear. Three uniform holes are present on the bottom of the buttstock.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 47 inches.

Caliber: .58 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
