Description:
Very handsome and rare Rigby sidelock ejector made on the Rigby “Rising Bite” action with gorgeously figured nitro Damascus barrels and highly figured French walnut stock and forearm. Rigby was well known for a distinctive finish on its Damascus barrels which left them with a deep etching as you will see in the photos. Rigby number 16125 is No. 1 of a pair that were made in 1891 and with its sharp engraving, fluted fences, and residual case coloring makes a striking presentation. Easy to carry for a day afield at 6lb 5oz.

The Rigby-Bissel rising bite was patented in 1879 to create a third bite for enhanced safety. The way it works is that a vertical bolt rises to engage in a slot in the center of a U-shaped top rib extension. See photo below. In addition, the forearm has ejector and non-ejector selector nuts which allow the shooter to utilize conventional extraction or selective ejection of shotshells.

The 30” Damascus barrels were reproofed for Nitro 2-3/4” shotshells and 1-1/8oz loads. They are topped by a raised solid tapered gamestyle rib which is inscribed “Jno. Rigby & Co. 72 St. James’s Street London Dublin”, The right barrel is bored 0.732 with a constriction of 0.000 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.027. The left barrel is also bored 0.732 and has a constriction of 0.010 for Quarter or Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.027. Cylinder is one of the most consistently patterning chokings and perfect for a first shot on fast flushing quail, grouse and woodcock.

The straight hand stock and splinter forearm are made of knock-out highly figured French walnut. The forearm has a pendulum opener. Finish is in excellent condition and checkering is crisp. Stock dimensions are 14-3/8” to a checkered butt by 1-3/8” by 2-1/8”. Cast off for the right hand shot.
