Description:
Scarce 19th Century Antique Belgian Boys’ Rifle 8MM Flobert
Offered here for sale and just acquired is this scarce and desirable 19th century Belgian “boys” rifle. This 19th-century Belgian 8mm Flobert "Boys'" rifle you're  is a fascinating and relatively rare example of early small-caliber firearms designed for youth training and marksmanship. While often labeled a "boys' rifle," these firearms sometimes served as military cadet or civilian training rifles, particularly in Europe, where small-caliber, low-power firearms were used to instill safe handling and marksmanship in young shooters.
Chambered for the 8mm Flobert  cartridge it is a low-powered rimfire round, first developed in the mid-19th century by Louis-Nicolas Flobert, a French gunsmith. It is more powerful than the .22 BB Cap or CB Cap but still considered very light, with no powder charge — it relies solely on the primer for propulsion. These rifles were designed for indoor or close-range shooting, often for target practice or basic training purposes.
The ELG in an oval with a crown is the classic proof mark of Liège, Belgium, which has been one of Europe's most prolific gunmaking centers since the 17th century. This mark certifies that the firearm was proof tested at the Liège Proof House, a requirement for commercial arms exported from Belgium.  These rifles were usually single-shot, such as this with simple break-open, bolt, or rolling block actions. Plain walnut stock.  The  rifle’s original finish and sound wood condition are significant, especially since many of these firearms were heavily used or neglected over time.
While British rook rifles (.295, .300, .310 calibers, etc.) were commonly imported to the U.S. and are still seen relatively frequently, Belgian-made 8mm Flobert boys’ rifles are much less common, particularly in this original condition. The rifle, with most of its barrel finish intact, a very good bore, and only minor cosmetic staining on the stock, would be highly collectible to enthusiasts of European training arms or early rimfires.
