The Early American and European countries inhabiting the frontier and remote outposts had to be very careful to sell only obsolescent firearms to the natives so that they could maintain the upper hand should tensions rise. This was likely manufactured in the United States where it was possibly traded to Native Americans in the 1860s to 1870s era. Many trade guns were shortened when their barrels were damaged or to make them more agile on horseback or in the woods. They were used from the colonial era and into the early 20th century and were the main firearms used by Native Americans through much of American history, including during the American Revolution, Custer's Last Stand, and the late 19th century Indian Wars. These types of shotguns, musket, and rifles with cut-down barrels and shortened stocks are referred to by collectors as “blanket rifles” or “blanket guns”. These were so named as they were shortened to fit under a wagon blanket, saddle blanket, or pancho to remain hidden until needed. The action functions, although the hammer has some wiggle. The bore is good for its age with visible grooves. A spilt wraps the wrist and shows movement with light pressure. The forend and stock have seen repairs over time and are well-used. Lightly engraved lock. The rear ramrod lug is marked “ANF’D BY/ELEC. Co.”MASS. USA”. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 17-7/8 inches. Caliber: .38 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
