Description:
Available - this National Arms No. 2 Deringer. Chambered for the .41 Short Rimfire cartridge it's in excellent, clean condition overall. This is a very nice Moore's Patent No.2 "Deringer" single shot pocket pistol in .41 rimfire, made by the National Firearms Co in Brooklyn, N.Y.. The design for a single shot pocket pistol using a .41 caliber rimfire short cartridge was patented by Daniel Moore in 1861, and examples were produced by the Moore's Patent Firearms Co. until the company by the National Firearms Company during 1863. The "No.1 Deringer" was somewhat difficult to hold, so the "No.2 Deringer" was introduced with design similar to Smith & Wesson pistols of the time, with a "Bird's Head" style pistol grip.
This example has a great patina from years of storage, but the silver plate finish is about 75% intact. The top of the barrel reads:
NATIONAL ARMS Co. BROOKLYN, N.Y. The pistol is marked on the underside of the barrel with serial number 6258, The checkered Wanut grip panels are in near perfect condition. The barrel opening mechanism works as it should and the hammer has both a safety postion which allows for barrel opening, and full cock position - the hammer drops when th etrigger is pulled. The bore is in decent shape with well defined rifling. All of the engraving and markings are very good. These pistols were made from 1863 to 1870 - this is probably one of the later models.
