The Original M&P Shield (2012):
Smith & Wesson introduced the original M&P Shield in 2012. It was designed as a slim, lightweight, and concealable version of their full-sized M&P (Military & Police) pistol.
Initially chambered in 9mm and .40 S&W, it featured a single-stack magazine, contributing to its thin profile (less than 1 inch wide).
The original Shield was striker-fired and incorporated an improved trigger with a positive reset, a first for the M&P line.
It quickly became a popular choice for concealed carry due to its size, reliability, and affordable price point. In fact, by 2016, the 9mm M&P Shield was reportedly the best-selling gun in America. A .45 ACP variant was added in 2016, featuring a slightly longer barrel.
The M&P Shield M2.0 (2017):
In October 2017, Smith & Wesson launched the M&P Shield M2.0, which can be seen as an evolution of the original.
Key upgrades included a more aggressive grip texture for enhanced control, improved slide serrations for better manipulation, and a crisper trigger with a lighter pull and tactile reset, aligning with contemporary defensive handgun theories.
Despite the upgrades, the Shield M2.0 retained the slim dimensions and popular features of the original, ensuring compatibility with most holsters and accessories designed for the first generation.
The M&P Shield EZ Series (2018 - Present):
Recognizing a demand for handguns that are easier to operate, especially for individuals with weaker hand strength or those less familiar with semi-automatic pistols, Smith & Wesson introduced the M&P380 Shield EZ in 2018.
The \"EZ\" designation highlights its key features: Easy-to-rack slide, easy-to-load magazine, and easy-to-clean design.
The Shield EZ models utilize an internal hammer-fired system instead of the striker-fired system found in other M&P Shield variants. This design significantly reduces the force required to rack the slide.
The magazines for the EZ series feature load-assist tabs on the sides, making them much easier to load without the need for tools.
The slide features enhanced rear serrations with enlarged tabs for a better grip. A tactile loaded chamber indicator allows the user to easily confirm the presence of a round in the chamber by both sight and touch.
In December 2019, Smith & Wesson expanded the EZ series with the M&P9 Shield EZ, chambered in the popular 9mm cartridge. This model retained the easy-to-use features of the .380 version while offering the more potent 9mm chambering.
The M&P9 Shield EZ features an 8+1 round capacity magazine and a 3.675-inch barrel. It also includes a Picatinny-style rail for accessories.
Performance Center versions of the M&P9 Shield EZ were later introduced, featuring upgrades like ported barrels, enhanced sights (including fiber optic night sights), and flat-face aluminum triggers.
Notably, the M&P Shield EZ models also feature a grip safety, a departure from the trigger safety common in other M&P pistols. Disassembly is also made easier as it does not require pulling the trigger.
