Description:
1902 mfr. COLT Model 1877 LIGHTNING Revolver C&R DOC HOLLIDAY BILLY the KID

.38 Cal. Early Colt Double Action!

Here we present a C&R Colt Model 1877 Lightning Double Action Revolver in .38 Long Colt, made in 1902 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Model 1877 marked Colt’s first foray into double-action revolvers, and it was quite a hit, with over 166,000 units sold between 1877 and 1909. Despite its popularity, many shooters were still hesitant to abandon the reliable single-action design that had long proven itself. The Lightning, as it was called, gained fame through its notable owners—outlaws like William “Billy the Kid” Bonney, John Wesley Hardin, and the legendary “Doc” Holliday.

Designed in 1876 by William Mason, the Model 1877 was offered in three different calibers, which led to its informal nicknames. Production kicked off in January 1877, and the first model was known as the “Lightning,” chambered in .38 Long Colt. These nicknames originated from Benjamin Kittredge, the biggest Colt distributor in Cincinnati. He used them as marketing tools—also famously coining the term “Peacemaker” for the Model 1873 Single Action Army. Interestingly, Colt itself never officially adopted these nicknames in their official materials.

The overall condition is fine. Much of the original finish has been preserved. Robust, tight action in both single and double action modes. Bright, strongly rifled bore. Both grips are in very good shape containing little handling wear, with only a scuff on the right side. Markings are sharp. Numbers match.
