Engraved LONG BARRELED Single Barrel Fowling Gun
Here we present an antique R. & W. C. Biddle Double Barrel Percussion Side by Side Hammer Shotgun, made sometime in the mid-19th Century. R & W.C. Biddle & Co. of Philadelphia was a hardware store that operated in the 1850's to 1860's, and was noted for importing shotguns, gun locks, and barrels. It features a full-length stock though it is really quite light and handy compared to many of its American contemporaries. This would likely have been exported from Belgium to a country like the United States with a thriving market for all sorts of firearms. As people moved West and settled in remote areas, hunting was especially important to put food on the table and for protecting the homestead. This would have been a good gun for fowl hunting.
The overall condition is good. The hammer will not hold in the cock position. Good bore for its age. A smooth brown patina has settled in on the barrel. Markings are legible. This example sports a solid stock with an average amount of handling wear, dents, and dings.
