Description:
INDIAN WARS Antique U.S. SPRINGFIELD M1884 .45-70 TRAPDOOR with ROD BAYONET

Single Shot U.S. MILITARY Rifle SWP/1891 Cartouche

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle with a Rod Bayonet, manufactured in 1891 by the Springfield Armory. This rifle was manufactured nearing the end of the Indian Wars and just after the Wounded Knee massacre. After the Civil War, the War Department wanted a breech-loading rifle. To be specific, it wanted a breech-loading rifle that would chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted.

As mentioned above, this rifle was manufactured in 1891and has a light "SWP/1891" cartouche on the stock. The left of stock is stamped "39 SEP. CO./81" and carved "RAY.LITTLE", with the right stock stamped "39/81".

The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina is preserved. Strong action. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. Markings are legible. This example has maintained a solid stock with average amounts of wear. The top of the wrist is drilled and tapped. “1891” dated cartouche.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 32-5/8 inches.
