Description: Our research shows this Winchester model 1866 was manufactured in 1869, making it built in the third year of production. It is chambered in .44 Rimfire. Features a 24" Octagon barrel, an up charge special feature for the 1866. Its tubular magazine is capable of holding 17 rounds. This rifle includes numerous additional special features including nickel-plated finish, clover leaf rear sight, sling swivels, and the for mentioned octagon barrel. Nickel-plated parts include: receiver lever, butt plate, forend cap,mag tube, and swivels. According to Madis, only 300 guns of the Winchester 1866 model were plated in some manner. The Forend cap is brass in the forwardsling swivel is the early type and can rotate 360° on a perpendicular axis to the magazine. The hammer on this rifle also has the half cock feature. This is exceedingly rare on firearms after 23,000. An important feature with regards to the safety of this rifle that the hammer could be placed on half cock. The lever loop on this rifle is of the small variety. Research also indicates that this occurred in every four rifles. Magazine cap is the threaded type, no screw needed for retaining it. The butt plate trapdoor is an open outward (early) type. The wood to metal fit on this 1866 is excellent all the way around. As seen on page 86 of John E. Parson's The First Winchester, and The Winchester Book 1 of 1000 1985 Madis page 89, this photo and caption indicate the presence of a mortise cover slot milled into the top of the receiver. Cover not provided. The bore on this rifle shows rifling and evidence of wear and corrosion constant with black powder era rifles. As seen in the pictures the plating is thin in areas showing the brass frame that is underneath. Brass has not been polished and maintains patina color.
