This .45-70 hammerless Sharps military rifle is unusual for two reasons. First it has a detachable checkered pistol grip made of matching walnut to the stock and held by one screw. Second it has the encircled "LB" cartouche stamped in the middle of the left side of the stock. New information printed in the excellent Sharps Firearms four volume set (Vol. IV on the 1878 Borchardt rifles, Page 288) shows this exact cartouche and explains from original text that it was applied by J. P. Lower of Denver, Colorado. Apparently, when the Sharps company was going out of business ,in 1880 Lower bought the remaining stock of Borchardt parts. From these he assembled a number of completed military rifles and stamped them with this "LB" cartouche within a circle on the left side of the stock. It stood for "Lower Borchardt." He also sporterized Borchardt models and since this one has a low serial number (#92XX), it is possible it was one he had remaining in stock which on which he added the pistol grip. In the earlier Sharps book by Frank Sellers, the author mentions some military models were made with pistol grips or detachable pistol grips with no other details about threm. Either way, this is an interesting Colorado Sharps. The receiver and barrel retain fine lightly aged blue with a hint of plum mixing from age. All markings are sharp. Cleaning rod is intact. Stock and forearm generally excellent with only light handling marks. Tight action with correctly functioning safety and checkered steel butt plate. Interestingly, the front sight is different from the standard one-piece military type as it has a groove cut in it for a blade. This one appears to have had a bone or ivory blade which has broken off with only a portion remaining in the groove- No doube a Lower addition. Standard Borchardt military rear sight, exc. bore with only some light corrosion or leading ahead of the chamber that may brush out. In all, one of the more interesting and unusual Sharps Borchardt military rifles I've seen! $3250.
