Description:
STATE of NEW YORK Antique WAR OF 1812 Pomeroy U.S. M1808 Flintlock Musket

Marked “S.NY” for State of New York & “P M/S.J 1808”

Here we present an antique State of New York Martially Inspected L. Pomeroy U.S. Model 1808 Contract Flintlock Musket, made in 1808 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Europe was embroiled in the Napoleonic Wars and the young United States was sorely unprepared for any major military action, so Congress moved to equip state militias in 1808. About 85,200 “Model 1808” Muskets were produced by a total of 19 different contractors and delivered to the state militias. This move proved to be none too soon as the War of 1812 brought part of the European conflict to the shores of the young United States. Lemuel Pomeroy was a perennial contractor of U.S. martial weapons in the first half of the 19th Century. Many of these flintlock muskets were later updated to percussion systems for use during the American Civil War.

Both the lock and the barrel are marked “S.NY”, standing for State of New York. The barrel is inspector marked “P M” and “SJ” with a date of “1808”. The musket is mounted in iron hardware.

The overall condition is good. Dark patina throughout. The barrel’s vent has been repaired but this appears to be original flintlock configuration. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock shows much use. There is some minor splitting behind the barrel tang, otherwise, the stock is solid. Good cartouche on the left stock flat and clear inspection markings on the barrel. A great musket for the New York Militia, made before the War of 1812!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 42 inches.

Caliber: .69 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
