Description: ******* Offers welcomed and entertained ******* Charles Werner immigrated from Germany and made firearms in Rochester, NY, along with his brother Otto, from 1855 to 1876. This particular rifle is a .40 caliber, single shot percussion target and/or sniper model, having a 31" full octagon barrel with the last 1" turned round to accept a ball/bullet starter (I do have the original brass starter but it is not pictured), half-stock made of walnut, no patch box, ornately engraved trigger guard, Billinghurst-style steel butt plate, double set trigger, globe front target sight, lollipop-style tang peep sight that screws into the upper tang, and static semi-buckhorn rear sight dovetailed into the barrel. The original hickory ramrod remains in the ferrules under the barrel. There is no serial number, and the only marking is on the top of the barrel, which reads in two lines "C. WERNER ROCHESTER N.Y." CONDITION: The metal parts are a light patina, never having been cleaned. Barrel address is clear. Bore is very strong. Ball/bullet starter fits on perfectly and functions correctly. Stock is sound with no splits or cracks, nicely grained and fitted. The tang peep screws in and out of the upper tang with ease. The double set trigger functions perfectly, and the adjusting screw turns freely to adjust the set trigger tension. Grades NRA Antique Very Good. A seldom-found manufacturer, this is a beautiful piece of classic New York State Civil War period rifle making that will definitely gain value over time as a collectors item while displaying nicely. TERMS: No international sales and no sales to Alaska or Hawaii.
