The bright metal surfaces of this Italian made reproduction rifle remain in very good condition showing light cleaning marks along the barrel and lock with a few scattered small spots of discoloration. The high hump lock is faux marked “C.S. Richmond/1862”, the barrel “V / P / (eagle head)”. The bright brass buttplate and nosecap appear to be plated steel and rate very good. The nicely finished walnut stock is in excellent condition showing attractive straight grain figure, three small impact marks on top of the comb and small scattered handling marks. The rifle features a functional lock with strong springs, threaded steel ramrod and moderately soiled reproduction cloth sling. An attractive reproduction musket that has seen minimal use. Tjhe nipple is crisp and clean. Would make an excellent re-enactor rifle . Faithful copy of the original C.S. Richmond musket. Manufactured by the Richmond Armory from 1861 to 1865, the C.S. Richmond Musket, noted for its accuracy, was produced in larger numbers than all other Confederate long arms manufactured during the Civil War, for a total of 31,000 rifles, 5,400 carbines and 1,350 short rifles. Features a one-piece barrel of forged steel with “VP” and an eagle head stamped to the left of the breech. Markings on the lock are “1862” to the left of the hammer and “C.S. RICHMOND, VA” to the right of the hammer. The one-piece stock is oil-finished walnut. Features a brass nose cap. NSSA approved. In 1861, the Confederacy captured the Union-held town of Harper’s Ferry in western Virginia, and salvaged the machinery used to manufacture the Springfield Model 1855 muskets. Confederate troops captured 33,993 black walnut stocks with the machinery. The machinery and stocks were delivered to Richmond and the rifling machinery was transferred to the Fayetteville Arsenal.
