The firearm has been documented by The Guns of History, Inc. as authored by Wendell Grangaard on November 7,2022. What makes this rifle highly collectible stems from his research which shows it being issued to Pvt. Samuel S. Shade, Company C of the 7th Cavalry. Pvt. Shade was listed as killed in action during the battle of The Little Big Horn. His troop was assighned to the Northern Sector. Mr. Grangaard believes Pvt Shade was issued this rifle as a spare and was found in his spare scabbard. He also believes that it was recovered by a Blackfeet Lakota Sioux Indian named Black Crow who was seeking to take one of the fallen soldier's horse and found the rifle in a saddle bag. The provenece of this rifle is documented along with his reference sources which will accompany this gun. In addition there a copy of Private Shade's discharge certificate that indicates his location and cause of death. The rifle itself is in fair condition with a decent patina. It is missing the saddle ring attachment. The barell interior is in rough shape with significant rust and pitting although you can still make out the land and grooves. I can only attribute this condition to the little maintenance performed by the indian owner being unfamiliar to the caustic effect of black powder. The action moves smoothly and the magazine tube is intact and can be removed easily. There is one round of original ammo that will acompany the gun along with a box of blanks.
