Description:
This is a very nice, antique Marlin 1881 - Cody records show that it shipped on  February 29th - 1884, a leap year date!  It is over 140 years old.  The Model 1881 was Marlins first lever action,  a top ejection,  very well made, Winchester thought this rifle might put them out of business.  This rifle is has a full  28" octagonal barrel, chambered for the .40-60 Marlin  - ( dimensionally the same  as the .40-65 Winchester ).  It has a full magazine and a crescent rifle butt - it seems most of these rifles have a shotgun butt.  The wood is near excellent, it is unsanded, and I believe still retains some original finish, with likely thin coats of oil later applied.  The stocks are solid, tight, showing some character marks, small impressions, dents, scratches and stains.  The receiver still shows some good original blue, especially on the lower tang. The sides of the receiver show the forging straitions, smooth patina, several small dings, marks around the front receiver ring and fading color, smooth - not pitted like many.  The 28" barrel has a very good bore, with strong well defined lands the whole way, some frosting in the grooves and maybe a few scattered light abrasions.  The action works properly, it feeds, fires and ejects as it should. It has a very positive feel, and maybe slightly stiff on closing. The barrel looks great - nice square corners and flats, excellent barrel legend and caliber stamp - crisp, all lettering legible. The long Marlin rear sight looks like it was never bumped. The front sight has an interesting silver coin as a replacement - I believe it is a 1883 or '88 nickel.  The magazine tube looks nice, straight, no dents, tight fit - it does have a few very small pin prick pit specks , mostly noticeable on the left side - it is possible that the mag tube was cleaned , and touched up at some time - possibly the barrel also, but hard to tell.  The barrel and mag tube look excellent, with a plumbish brown, darkening color; overall this is a great looking early Marlin - far better than most 1881's.  **** This is an antique, and can ship directly to the buyer in * Most * states, some like NJ may still require a FFL transfer.  Certified funds/check preferred, however i can accept a C.Card with a .03% added fee.  Shipping will include full insurance. ****  Thank you
