Description:
Antique J. HENRY & Son BOULTON GUN WORKS .40 Percussion HALF STOCK Rifle

Pre-CIVIL WAR Frontier PENNSYLVANIA MADE Longarm

Here we present an antique J. Henry & Son Percussion Half Stock Rifle. This rifle was manufactured around 1860 and matches others by J. Henry & Son (James and Granville Henry) manufactured at the Boulton Gun Works near Nazareth, Pennsylvania. During the Antebellum Era, it was common for firearms manufacturers to have contracts with the U.S. government, supplying rifles used for annuity and treaty payments to Native Americans. One notable figure in this landscape was John Joseph Henry, who began his gun-making business in Philadelphia in 1807. He ran his operation until 1822, when he merged with his brother William’s business, known as Boulton Gun Works, located in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. After this merger, their guns bore the mark “JJ HENRY, BOULTON.”

John Henry was also recognized for manufacturing muskets during the Civil War. As the nation faced the urgent need for more military arms—calling for 100,000 volunteers to quell the rebellion and Pennsylvania militia units to defend the state—Henry saw an opportunity. He produced two types of military-style rifles and a cadet musket. These rifles could be equipped with either a socket or a saber bayonet, and in Henry’s records, they were known as “Mini Rifles” or “Saber Rifles.”
The overall condition is good. The action fully functions with some hammer wiggle and hammer head chipping. Original and deep, plum barrel patina. Solid stock with a few grain splits and average handling wear. Markings are legible. There is a stable repaired break through the breech.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 39 inches.
