Description:
1850-60s Antique J. BARNES Back Action PERCUSSION Half Stock SPORTING Rifle

With CHECKERED WRIST and GERMAN SILVER MOUNTS

Here we present an antique J. Barnes Maker South Orange Marked Percussion Rifle made circa the 1850s to the 1860s. The percussion rifle was a type of rifle that utilized the percussion lock mechanism to fire a bullet or musket ball. The Percussion lock mechanism was an evolution of the flintlock mechanism used on earlier muskets and rifles, with the percussion rifle being introduced somewhere around 1820. The percussion rifle had a slight advantage when it came to rate of fire over its flintlock counterparts.

The use of a percussion cap reduced the reloading time, meaning the average number of shots per minute would consistently fall between three and four per minute. The percussion lock was also very reliable in wet conditions, and the reverse is true for the flintlocks with the primer not being affected by having water in contact with it, while the powder was virtually incapable of being exposed to water. This rifle would have also been used to put food on the table or defend the homestead against unwanted intruders!

The overall condition is good. This rifle features a smooth gray and brown patina, showcasing its age. The front ramrod ferrule is detached and has been re-glued. The wood has been refinished, but overall, it shows only minor wear. Strong action. The inscription “J. BARNES MAKER SOUTH ORANGE” is engraved on the barrel, with “J. BARNES” marked on the lock. The barrel is cut for a starter. The walnut half-stock features a checkered wrist and is accented with German silver mounts.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 32-1/4 inches.
