Description:
Desirable NEW ORLEANS Retailer ENGRAVED Antique RICH HOLLIS & SONS Pistol

With HYDE & GOODRICH Retailer Marking

Here we present an antique Richard Hollis & Sons Percussion Pistol made circa 1840 in London, England. This example has the desirable “Hyde & Goodrich” of New Orleans retailer marking on the barrel flat. Hyde & Goodrich were importers of a variety of goods, including firearms, until the fall of New Orleans to the Union during the American Civil War. Richard Hollis was active in Birmingham, England from the early to mid-1800s and appears to have passed away sometime before 1847 as an advertisement from that year shows the company reformed as Hollis Brothers & Co. Hollis & Sons started out in the early part of the 19th century with the name of “Hollis Brothers”.

It continued under that trade name until 1847 when it was re-named “Hollis Brothers & Co. which continued until 1848, when it became “Hollis & Sheath” after Isaac took on Isaac Brentnall Sheath as a partner. This continued until 1861 when the firm changed its name to I. Hollis & Sons on the departure of Sheath.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. Replacement nipple. The bore is in good shape for its age. The crack that winds around the wrist is stable. Some worn grip checkering. Sharp markings. Lightly engraved with floral designs. God and silver barrel bands.
