Approximately 4,825 of the Colt Model 1855 Rifle-Muskets were manufactured in .56 caliber with 37 1/2 inch barrels out of the total 9,310 military rifles estimated to have been manufactured in 1856-1864. Most of us have seen a Colt “Sidehammer” revolver, but few have had the pleasure of seeing one of these revolving carbines. These sidehammers also go by the nickname “Root” thanks to the involvement of Superintendent Elisha K. Root, who was instrumental to the early success of Colt Manufacturing. The Colt Revolving Rifle of 1855, named the “Model 1855” was an effort by Colt to attempt to provide the repeating action of a revolver to a carbine or rifle. Carbines were a shortened barrel form of their rifle counterparts and were more suitable for use by second line infantry and mounted troops. The Model 1855 brought these qualities together in a handy design under the widely popular “Colt” brand. The Model 1855 was available in three calibers, those being .36, .44, and .56. It came in five barrel lengths of 15, 18, 21, 24, and 37-1/2 inches. The .36 and .44 calibers came with a six shot cylinder, while the .56 caliber had a five shot. This gun held a distinct advantage over the muskets of the day, being able to reel off 5 or 6 shots as compared to the single shot muskets. The overall condition is good. Gray patina. The action is strong. The bore is dark with strong rifling. The wood has been replaced. Numbers differ on the frame and the trigger guard. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 37-1/2 inches. Caliber: .56 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
