These muskets are attributed to Lemul Pomeroy of Pittsfield, MA, who produced muskets for several states. They all have an approx. 42"" barrel, locks with a point at the rear, and brass pans with fence. The 41.5" barrel on this musket has a lightly oxidized bore. The metal surfaces are bright with an overlying brown oxidized patina. There are no proof markings on the barrel save for a deeply impressed condemnation mark above the touch hole. The lockplate with brass pan and flat beveled edge hammer is marked S.CT. The ends of the triggerguard are rounded and the swivels hang loosely in the pattern of the 1808 or 1795 muskets. The American walnut stock rates very good showing an old cleaning years ago, with some minor dings and handling marks scattered about the surface, and a few thin slivers along the barrel channel. There are no inspector markings. The front sight has been ground from the front band and a simple bead is in its place. The ramrod appears to be original. The lock functions properly mechanically. This interesting example of an 1808 state contract musket appears to be in original flint. Price: $1,795.00 Antique: Yes |
