Yugoslav Version of the KARABINER 98k Rifle
Here we present a C&R Yugoslavian Mauser Model 48 Rifle, made circa 1950 to 1952 at Preduzece 44, or “factory” 44. This rifle is a post-World War II Yugoslav version of the German Karabiner 98k designed by Mauser. It was the standard service rifle of the Yugoslav People's Army from the early 1950s until its replacement by the Zastava M59/66, a licensed copy of the Soviet SKS semi- automatic carbine, in the early 1960s.
During World War II, Germany seized Yugoslavia's Mauser rifles and took most of the useful machinery from the Kragujevac Military Technical Institute, leaving Yugoslavia unable to produce rifles afterward. After the war, Yugoslavia had to rebuild its manufacturing capabilities, often using captured German equipment in the Soviet Union. Starting in 1948, Yugoslavia began developing its own firearms, leading to the finalization of the Model 48 Mauser in 1950. This rifle was in production for just three years before being replaced by a simpler version, the Model 48A.
The overall condition is good. This example is arsenal refinished. Excellent action. Bright, sharply rifled bore. Markings are legible. “M.A.I.” import marked. Numbers match except for the magazine floorplate. Solid stock with minimal handling evidence.
